About Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar Temple

Thiruvenkadu is the Navagraha shrine of Budhan (Mercury) and one of six places held equal to Kasi; the river here is even called Manikarnika. Known as Adi Chidambaram, it shares a Chidambara Rahasyam and a Perumal shrine with Chidambaram, finds mention in the Valmiki Ramayana, and is the 11th Thevaram shrine on the north bank of the Cauvery, sung by Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar.

Everything here comes in threes: Shiva as Swetharanyeswarar, Nataraja and Aghoramurthy; the goddess as Brahmavidyanayaki, Durga and Kali; the Agni, Soma and Surya tanks; and three sacred trees. Legend says Shiva defeated Yama here to save the boy Swetaketu, and that the couple who prayed after bathing in the three tanks were blessed with Meykandar, author of the Sivagnana Bodham. The saint Pattinathar was from Thiruvenkadu.
