About Thiruindalur Parimala Ranganathar Temple

Thiruindalur, on the north bank of the Cauvery at Mayiladuthurai, is the Parimala Rangam among the Pancharanga shrines of the Ranganatha tradition. In the Alwars’ hymns it is Thiruvindalur, and it was also called Sugandhavanam for the fragrant flower gardens around it. The temple is honoured as the Chandra Sapa Vimochana sthalam, where the Moon was released from a curse.

The demons Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas Brahma had brought forth. Vishnu took the Matsya avatar, slew them, recovered the Vedas and restored their pure fragrance (parimalam), spoilt by the demons’ touch — so he reclines here as Parimala Ranganathar. Among all 108 Divya Desams, the temple says, only here is the Cauvery festival held through the whole month of Aippasi.
