About Tiruttani Murugan Temple
Tiruttani Murugan Temple is the fifth of Murugan’s six abodes. Its name comes from thanigai — calming: after the great war with Surapadman, and a playful quarrel with the hunters whose daughter Valli he married, Murugan’s anger settled on this hill. Devotees see it as a place where fear, worry and illness are likewise eased.
The temple dates back to the Chola and Vijayanagara periods and is a fine example of Dravidian architecture. Arunagirinathar sang of Murugan seated here with Valli, and Kachiappa Munivar wrote in the Kandha Puranam that Tiruttani is as foremost among hills as the lotus among flowers and the Ganga among rivers.
