Pilgrimage
Planning Your Visit
Overview
- •Ayodhya, situated on the banks of the Saryu River in Uttar Pradesh, is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) and is revered as the birthplace of Lord Rama.
- •The city's spiritual heart is the newly consecrated Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, which opened after the landmark 2019 Supreme Court verdict and the Pran Pratishtha ceremony in January 2024.
- •Beyond the grand temple, pilgrims traditionally visit Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Ram Ki Paidi ghats, Nageshwarnath Temple, Treta Ke Thakur, Dashrath Mahal, Guptar Ghat, and Tulsi Smarak Bhawan.
- •With massive infrastructure upgrades completed around the temple's construction, Ayodhya is now more accessible than ever, yet requires careful planning to navigate its soaring popularity.
Tips
- Book your darshan slot and accommodation at least 2-3 weeks in advance, especially if traveling during festival periods or weekends; hotels near the temple fill up fast.
- Start your pilgrimage with Hanuman Garhi, as per local tradition, before heading to the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple—this also helps you avoid the main rush at the temple's opening hours.
- Dress modestly and conservatively (shoulders and knees covered) as a mark of respect; remove footwear before entering temple precincts—use the free shoe-keeping counters.
- Carry minimal belongings: only a small bag with your ID, phone, and water bottle; large bags, cameras, and electronic devices are not allowed inside the temple complex.
- Hire a registered local guide or use the official audio guide to understand the significance of sites like Kanak Bhawan and Ram Ki Paidi—this enriches the experience and helps navigate the sprawling complex.
- Plan a visit to Ram Ki Paidi at sunset for the serene evening aarti, and if possible, time your trip to coincide with the annual Deepotsav (usually October-November) to witness the Guinness World Record lamp-lighting ceremony, but be prepared for massive crowds.
