- •The Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Pune national highway both pass through Lonavala, making it easily accessible by road.
- •From the Pune suburbs, local trains are available from Pune Junction.
- •The town is also home to INS Shivaji (formerly HMIS Shivaji), the Indian Navy's premier technical training institute, commissioned on 16 February 1945.
Accommodation
Lonavala offers a range of accommodation options, from budget hotels and homestays to luxury resorts, many of which are clustered around the main town and along the Mumbai-Pune highway. For a quieter stay, consider properties in Khandala or near the expressway, which provide easy access to viewpoints and trekking trails. Booking in advance is advisable during peak monsoon and holiday seasons, as the hill station attracts many visitors from Mumbai and Pune.
Tips
- The best time to visit Lonavala is during the monsoon (June to September) when the hills are lush and waterfalls are in full flow, but be prepared for heavy rain and slippery trails; winter (October to February) offers pleasant weather for sightseeing.
- Lonavala is well-connected by train, with regular local trains from Pune Junction and long-distance trains from Mumbai; the railway station is centrally located, making it convenient to reach most attractions.
- By road, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune national highway both pass through Lonavala; driving from Mumbai takes about 2 hours and from Pune about 1.5 hours, but avoid weekend evenings when traffic can be heavy.
- Don't miss trying the local chikki, a hard candy made from jaggery and nuts, which is a specialty of Lonavala and available in many flavors at shops around the town.
- While visiting INS Shivaji, the Indian Navy's premier technical training institute, note that it is an active military establishment and not open to the public; you can only view it from outside or with prior official permission.
- Pack according to the season: light woolens for winter, rain gear for monsoon, and comfortable walking shoes for exploring viewpoints and forts; also carry cash as some small vendors may not accept cards.
