Legend of Vibhishana's Coronation

According to the Ramayana, after the war between Rama and Ravana, Vibhishana, who had defected to Rama's side, was crowned as the King of Lanka. The coronation took place at this very spot, and Rama installed Vibhishana as the ruler. The temple is also believed to be the place where Rama performed the 'Pattabhishekam' (coronation) of Vibhishana. Another legend states that the temple marks the spot where Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman rested after the war, and the idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman are worshipped here.

Architecture

The temple is a fine example of traditional Dravidian architecture, with a modest yet elegant structure. It features a gopuram (tower) at the entrance, which is adorned with intricate carvings of deities and mythological figures. The sanctum sanctorum houses the main deities, and the temple complex includes a spacious courtyard, pillared halls, and a holy tank. The idols are made of stone and are beautifully sculpted, with intricate details that reflect the skill of ancient artisans.

Rituals & Ceremonies

The temple follows the traditional Agama rituals. Daily rituals include Suprabhatam (morning awakening of the deity), Abhishekam (holy bath), Alankaram (decoration), and Deeparadhana (lighting of lamps). Special pujas are performed on important festivals such as Ram Navami, Navaratri, and Hanuman Jayanti. The temple also conducts the 'Vibhishana Pattabhishekam' ceremony annually, which reenacts the coronation of Vibhishana. The temple is located at Dhanushkodi Road, Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, India. It is approximately 18 kilometers from Rameshwaram town and about 2 kilometers from the Dhanushkodi beach. The temple is situated near the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, offering scenic views of the sea.

Rameshwaram Railway Station is well-connected to major cities like Chennai and Madurai. From Rameshwaram town, one can hire auto-rickshaws, taxis, or take local buses to reach the temple. The road leading to the temple passes through scenic landscapes and the famous Pamban Bridge.
