  • •The temple and the town are considered as holy pilgrimage sites for Shaiva and Vaishnava sects.

Overview

  • •Rameshwaram, located on Rameshwaram Island in Tamil Nadu, is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism.
  • •It is revered as the place where Lord Rama, along with his consort Sita and brother Lakshmana, worshipped Lord Shiva to absolve the sin of killing Ravana.
  • •The town is synonymous with the Ramanathaswamy Temple, a magnificent example of Dravidian architecture, and is considered a sacred tirtha (pilgrimage site) that grants moksha (liberation) to devotees.

Religious Significance

Rameshwaram is one of the holiest places in India, revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites. The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the spiritual heart of the town, where Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva to atone for the sin of killing Ravana. A pilgrimage here is believed to grant liberation (moksha) and absolve devotees of their sins.

Spiritual Practices

  • Chanting the name of Rama and Shiva, and meditating on the Ramayana's teachings.
  • Performing pradakshina (circumambulation) around the temple corridors, which are the longest in the world.
  • Engaging in danam (charity) and seva (service) as part of the pilgrimage.
  • Practicing fasting and abstinence as a form of purification.
  • Seeking the blessings of the temple's sacred elephants and participating in the daily rituals as a form of devotion.

Ramayana Connection

  • •According to the Ramayana, after defeating Ravana in Lanka, Lord Rama returned to Rameshwaram.
  • •He wanted to perform a Shiva puja to cleanse the sin of 'Brahmahatya' (killing a Brahmin, as Ravana was a Brahmin).
  • •He sent Hanuman to Kailash to bring a lingam, but Hanuman was delayed.
  • •To avoid an inauspicious time, Sita fashioned a lingam from sand, which Rama worshipped.
  • •This lingam is known as the 'Ramalingam' or 'Sand Lingam', and it is the primary deity in the Ramanathaswamy Temple.
  • •Hanuman, upon his return, was disappointed, and Rama consoled him by installing a second lingam, the 'Hanumanthalingam' or 'Viswalingam', and decreed that worshipping the Ramalingam would be the main ritual.

Char Dham Significance

  • •Rameshwaram is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, along with Badrinath, Dwarka, and Puri.

  • •Completing the Char Dham circuit is said to wash away all sins and attain liberation.

Jyotirlinga Significance

  • •Rameshwaram is home to the Ramanathaswamy Temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
  • •Jyotirlingas are sacred shrines of Lord Shiva where he is believed to have appeared as a column of light (Jyoti).
  • •The Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga is unique as it is associated with Lord Rama, making it a vital link between Vaishnavism (worship of Vishnu) and Shaivism (worship of Shiva).
  • •It represents the unity of these two major sects of Hinduism.
