Pamban Bridge

History

The original Pamban Bridge, also known as the Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge, was opened on February 24, 1914. It was the first sea bridge in India and was considered an engineering marvel of its time.

Engineering

The bridge is a cantilever-type structure with a double-leaf bascule section that can be raised to allow ships to pass through. The central span is about 63 meters (207 feet) and is manually operated using a lever mechanism.

Rail Bridge
