Famous Temples in Rameshwaram

The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the crown jewel of Rameshwaram and one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is believed to have been established by Lord Rama himself to worship Shiva after his victory over Ravana. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the four Char Dham sites, making it of immense spiritual significance. The temple boasts the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India, measuring 197 meters in length and 133 meters in width, adorned with 1,212 intricately carved pillars depicting various deities and mythological scenes. The temple complex houses 22 sacred wells (theerthams), each with water believed to have different healing properties. Devotees bathe in these wells before seeking darshan, believing it washes away sins. The temple's architecture is a marvel of Dravidian style, with towering gopurams (gateway towers) and beautiful mandapams (halls). The main sanctum houses the lingam believed to have been brought by Hanuman from Mount Kailash.

The Kothandaramaswamy Temple is a small but spiritually significant shrine situated on the seashore near Dhanushkodi. According to the Ramayana, this is the sacred spot where Vibhishana, brother of Ravana, surrendered to Lord Rama and was later crowned as the king of Lanka. The temple is remarkable for being one of the few structures in the Dhanushkodi area to survive the devastating 1964 cyclone that destroyed the entire town. The temple houses beautiful idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and Vibhishana in a standing posture. The serene location, surrounded by the sea on three sides, creates a peaceful atmosphere perfect for meditation and prayer. The temple is particularly significant for devotees seeking blessings for family harmony and prosperity. The walls of the temple depict scenes from the Ramayana, making it a place of both spiritual and cultural importance.

While not a traditional temple structure, Agni Theertham is considered one of the most sacred sites in Rameshwaram. Located on the eastern shore directly in front of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, this is the sacred sea shore where Lord Rama is believed to have purified himself after his battle with Ravana. The area has several small shrines and platforms where priests perform rituals and aarti ceremonies. Pilgrims take a holy dip in the calm, shallow waters before proceeding to the main temple, believing it washes away sins. The shoreline witnesses constant spiritual activity, especially during sunrise and sunset when devotees perform rituals and offer prayers. During auspicious occasions like Kartik Purnima, special ceremonies are performed here, creating a mesmerizing spiritual atmosphere. The area is considered the first of the 22 theerthams of Rameshwaram.

The Gandhamadhana Parvatham Temple is located atop a small hill about 3 km from the Ramanathaswamy Temple. The hill is named after the Gandhamadana mountain mentioned in the Ramayana. A climb of about 100 steps leads to a temple platform where Lord Rama's footprint is believed to be imprinted. The small temple at the summit houses this sacred footprint and offers blessings to devotees. From the top, visitors get a breathtaking 360-degree view of Rameshwaram town, the magnificent temple gopurams, the Bay of Bengal on one side, and the Indian Ocean on the other. The climb is moderate and can be completed by people of all fitness levels. The temple is particularly popular during sunrise and sunset when the views are most spectacular. The site is believed to be where Lord Rama rested during his search for Sita.
