About Bhavani Sangameswarar Temple

Bhavani Sangameswarar Temple stands at Kooduthurai, where the Bhavani river joins the Kaveri and, devotees believe, an unseen third river — the Amudha Nadhi — rises to meet them. Like Prayag in the north, the meeting of three rivers makes this the Dakshina Triveni Sangamam, and the Lord is named Sangameswarar. The temple covers about 4 acres on the north bank, ringed by five hills.

The temple’s legends are many. Kubera, flying over in his Pushpaka chariot, saw tigers and deer, elephants and lions drinking side by side under a glowing ilandhai (jujube) tree, worshipped the lingam beneath it, and asked that the place be named after his own Alagapuri. Sage Parasara is said to have shaped the leftover nectar from the churning of the ocean into the Amudhalingam, from which a spring flowed into the rivers. In 1804, when Bhavani was the district headquarters, Collector William Garrow is linked to the three holes still seen in the east wall facing the Vedanayaki shrine.

  • Amudhalingam linked to Sage Parasara
  • Ellu kizhi (sesame-bundle) offering
