About Chennimalai Murugan Temple
Chennimalai Murugan Temple crowns a hill in Erode district, off the Erode–Dharapuram highway, reached by a 1,320-ft stepped path (shaded, lit and with drinking water) or a 4-km road for vehicles. Valli has her own shrine behind the main sanctum. Below the hill on the south side is the Mamanga theertham, said to well up once in twelve years.
The temple’s story begins at nearby Kodumanal on the Noyyal, once a large town. A landlord noticed that one of his finest cows gave no milk; following her, the herd found her pouring it on one spot. Digging five or six feet down, they found a stone image of Murugan with a radiant face but roughly shaped below the waist. When a sculptor began to finish the legs, blood flowed, and the landlord, understanding that the Lord wished to stay as he was, built a small shrine for him on the hill.
