About Bannari Amman Temple

Bannari Amman Temple lies on the Sathyamangalam–Mysuru highway, about 14 km from Sathyamangalam at the edge of the forest, and draws devotees from all over Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The goddess is self-manifested, in the form of a lingam, and — unusually for a Tamil temple — she faces south. Instead of sacred ash, devotees receive a pinch of grey earth, the Amman Thiruman, as prasadam.

The temple’s great festival is the Kundam in Panguni (March–April), which runs for more than two weeks and blends temple ritual with the customs of the hill tribes nearby. The goddess is carried in a palanquin to the surrounding villages for a week, and the festival peaks when lakhs of devotees walk across a pit of glowing embers — followed by cattle, a sight found at no other temple.

History & Legend

The goddess at Bannari is swayambu — self-manifested — and appears as a lingam. Unusually, she faces south rather than east, and instead of sacred ash she gives devotees a pinch of grey earth, gathered from one particular spot, as her prasadam.

The temple’s festival grew out of the traditions of the hill tribes of Thimbam and the villages around Sathyamangalam, which is why the goddess still travels to those villages each year before the fire-walk.

Through the centuries

  1. 1982

The temple opens its Karunai Illam children’s home on 23 November 1982.

  2. 2016

Kudamuzhukku (consecration) held on 20 January 2016.

Customs & Rituals

  • Poochattu

The Kundam festival opens late on a Monday night or before dawn on the Tuesday after the new moon, asking the goddess’s leave to hold it.

  • Village tour

Bannari Amman and Sarugu Mariamman leave in a palanquin around midnight and spend seven days visiting nearby villages, starting with Chikkarasampalayam.

  • Kambam and the fire pit

After the goddess returns, a pit in front of the temple is filled with logs and lit; tribal devotees who carried the palanquin bring firewood from the forest.

  • The fire-walk

Around the full moon, the goddess is dressed in her gold kavacham and devotees — followed by cattle — walk across the glowing embers.

  • Chariot and Manjal Neerattu

The next day the goddess is drawn around the temple in a chariot; a turmeric-water ceremony and the Maru Pooja a week later close the season.

  • 108 lamp pooja

Every full moon, 108 devotees perform the Thiruvilakku pooja after the evening service. Each pays ₹200 of the ₹800 cost — the temple covers the rest — and receives 22 items, including a saree and a brass Kamatchi lamp.

  • Free prasadam all day

Ragi laddu, venpongal, lemon rice, rava kesari and sweet pongal are served free from 6 AM to 9 PM.
