About Samayapuram Mariamman Temple

Samayapuram Mariamman Temple stands on the Trichy–Chennai highway about 15 km from Tiruchirappalli and is one of the most visited goddess temples in Tamil Nadu. The town has gone by several older names — Kannanur, Kannapuram and Vikramapuram among them — and the goddess, eight-armed and self-manifested, is worshipped as the healer who protects her devotees from illness.

Its most unusual custom is the Patchai Pattini Viratham: for 28 days from the last Sunday of Masi, the goddess herself is said to fast for the good of her devotees, and only buttermilk, sugarcane juice, water and fruit are offered to her. The fast opens with the Poochorithal flower festival and leads into the Chithirai car festival, when lakhs of pilgrims pull the temple car around the streets.

  • Patchai Pattini — the goddess’s 28-day fast (Masi–Panguni)
  • Poochorithal flower festival on the last Sunday of Masi
  • Chithirai car festival and the Thai Poosam procession to the Kollidam
  • Golden chariot procession, bookable online

History & Legend

When Kamsa tried to kill the baby girl born to Devaki — not knowing she had been swapped with Krishna — the child slipped from his hands and rose into the sky armed with bow, arrow, spear and discus. That fierce form of the goddess, Mahamayi, is the one worshipped at Samayapuram as Maha Mariamman, the curer of disease.

The festival image is said to have been worshipped first by the Vijayanagara kings. While it was being carried by palanquin, the bearers set it down at Samayapuram to eat, and afterwards could not lift it again — so a temple was built where it rested. A local saying sums it up: “Sainthal Samayapuram” — where she leaned, she stayed.

Through the centuries

  1. Chola period

There are no inscriptions in the temple itself, but nearby Chola records suggest a Mariamman shrine already stood here.

  2. 13th century

The Hoysala kings make Kannanur (Samayapuram) their capital in the south, call it Vikramapuram and build the Boojeeswarar Shiva temple nearby.

  3. Nayak period

Vijayaranga Sokkanatha builds a separate temple for the goddess; the Mahamayi Theertham tank, with its central mandapam, dates from the Vijayanagara–Nayak era.

  4. 2017

Kumbabhishekam held on 6 February 2017.

  5. 2022

The 103-ft, seven-tier East Rajagopuram is consecrated on 6 July 2022.

Customs & Rituals

  • Patchai Pattini Viratham

From the last Sunday of Masi to the last Sunday of Panguni the goddess “fasts” for 28 days: no cooked offerings, only unsalted buttermilk, sugarcane juice, water and cooling fruits. Devotees believe worship in this period removes planetary doshas.

  • Poochorithal

On the last Sunday of Masi, baskets of flowers from across Tamil Nadu and beyond are carried around the temple and showered on the goddess; the temple stays open all night.

  • Agni Chatti

Devotees carry fire pots to the temple and set them down in a tank kept for them opposite the Mariamman Mandapam, giving their troubles to the goddess.

  • Salt and pepper offering

Packets of salt and pepper are offered by those recovering from measles and other illnesses.

  • Sugarcane cradle

Couples who were blessed with a child carry the baby in a cradle slung from a sugarcane stalk around the temple.

  • Silver eye offerings

Small silver eyes, hands, feet and figures are offered for healing.

  • Thai Poosam procession

The goddess travels in a glass palanquin to the Kollidam for a holy dip and is honoured by Srirangam’s Ranganathaswamy temple on the way back.

  • Navaratri arrows

On Vijayadashami the goddess is taken to a vanni tree and three arrows are shot into it.

Temple Animals & Services

  • 2GosalaAs on 8 December 2022A country-breed cow and a Sindhi bull are kept in the temple gosala.

Run by the temple

  • Oduvar Training SchoolA free three-year course in Thevaram singing for eight students, with free board, clothes and books and a ₹3,000 incentive for each student.
