About Srivilliputhur Andal Temple
Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams. Vishnu is worshipped here as Vadapathrasayee, reclining on the serpent couch, and Lakshmi is honoured as Andal — the poet-saint who, by temple tradition, was found as a child beneath a sacred tulasi plant within these grounds. Her best-loved custom lives on: the garland is first offered to Andal and only then taken to Vadapathrasayee, just as she once wore the garlands meant for the Lord.
The temple’s own sthala purana sits in nine chapters of the Varaha Purana, where the town is called Varaha Kshetra or Dhanvinavyapuram. It tells of the hunter-king Villi, who searched the Senbaga forest for his lost brother Kandan; in a dream the reclining Lord showed him the image hidden under a banyan tree and asked him to clear the forest and build a temple. Villi raised the shrine and a new town around it — "Villi’s new town", Villiputhur.

- Vishnu in the reclining posture under the Vimalakruthi vimana
- Sthala purana from the Varaha Purana, naming the town after king Villi
- Golden chariot and the famous kili (parrot) prasadam as offerings
