About Vallakottai Murugan Temple

Vallakottai Subramaniya Swamy Temple, near Sriperumbudur, is held to be about 1,200 years old. The temple tells of Bhagiratha, king of Ilanji, who in his pride insulted Sage Narada and lost his kingdom to the demon Koran. Repentant, he was guided by Durvasa to fast on Fridays and worship Murugan under a pathiri tree; the shrine he built is this temple, and the Murugan he prayed to, with Valli and Deivanai, is Kodaiyandavar. Another story says the village was once the fort of a demon named Vallan, slain by Murugan — “Vallan Kottai” became Vallakottai.

Arunagirinathar, halting at Thiruporur on his way to Thiruthani, saw Murugan in a dream asking, “Have you forgotten Vallakottai?” He came here and sang eight Thiruppugazh hymns, in which the town appears as Kodai Nagar. The temple is square in plan with a three-tier gopuram on the east, and it is especially sought out by those whose marriages face obstacles.
