Temple Guide

Overview

  • •Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is a vibrant metropolis on the Coromandel Coast.
  • •Its temple heritage is deeply intertwined with its history, which dates back to the British East India Company's founding of Fort St.
  • •George in 1639-1644.
  • •The city's spiritual landscape is dominated by the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture.
  • •Other key temples include the Parthasarathy Temple (a rare Vishnu temple from the Pallava era), the Ashtalakshmi Temple (a modern coastal shrine), and the ancient Marundeeswarar Temple (associated with healing).
  • •These sacred sites are not only places of worship but also vibrant centers of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam, especially during the Margazhi season in December.

Dress Code

Traditional Indian attire is recommended for both men and women. Men should ideally wear a dhoti or trousers with a shirt. Women are expected to dress modestly, wearing a saree, salwar kameez, or churidar with a dupatta. Avoid wearing shorts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothing. It is customary to remove footwear before entering the temple premises. Some temples provide lockers for storing shoes, but it is safer to carry a bag. Ensure that your shoulders and knees are covered as a mark of respect.

Rituals

  • Abhishekam: The ritual bathing of the deity with milk, curd, honey, sandalwood paste, and holy water, often performed during specific hours or on request (e.g., at Kapaleeshwarar, the abhishekam to the main lingam is a powerful experience).
  • Archa: A personal worship ritual where a priest recites the devotee's name and gotra (lineage) and offers flowers and sacred ash to the deity. This is a common practice for seeking blessings.
  • Deeparadhana: The waving of lamps (camphor or oil lamps) in front of the deity during the main puja times, accompanied by chanting of mantras and ringing of bells. This is a visually striking and spiritually uplifting ceremony.
  • Sahasranama Archana: The chanting of the 1008 names of the deity (e.g., Sri Vishnu Sahasranama at Parthasarathy Temple) followed by the offering of lotus petals or tulsi leaves. This is often performed on special days or by request.
  • Theerthaprasada Distribution: Taking a holy dip in the temple tank (like the Kapaleeshwarar Temple tank) or receiving the sacred water (theertham) and prasadam (blessed food) after the main puja. This is a simple yet deeply meaningful ritual.

Festivals

  • •The most famous festival at Kapaleeshwarar Temple is the Arupathimoovar festival (March-April), when the 63 Nayanmars (Shaivite saints) are taken in a grand procession.
  • •The Panguni Peruvizha (March-April) is another major celebration, marking the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati, with a huge chariot festival.
  • •The Brahmotsavam at Parthasarathy Temple (April-May) is a grand 10-day affair with processions of the deity on various vahanams (mounts).
  • •The Vaikunta Ekadasi (December-January) is a major event at Parthasarathy Temple, when the 'Paramapada Vasal' (gateway to heaven) is opened.
  • •Navaratri (September-October) is celebrated with great fervor in all temples, featuring colorful displays of dolls and special music performances.
  • •The Margazhi music and dance season (December-January) transforms temple premises into cultural stages, especially at Kapaleeshwarar and Parthasarathy temples.

Darshan Guide

Timings

Typically open daily from around 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with specific ritual times (such as morning abhishekam) varying by festival and season.

General Darshan

General darshan is free and involves queuing through the main entrance, moving through the outer prakaram, and having a brief view of the main lingam and the goddess shrine. The queue can be moderate during peak hours and festival days, but it moves steadily.

Special Darshan

There is no separate paid express darshan ticket for this temple; general darshan is the only option for all devotees. However, special rituals like abhishekam (sacred bathing of the deity) and archana (offering of flowers and chants) can be booked at the temple office for a fee, which may allow closer participation during those ceremonies.

Administration

  • •The temple is administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu, which oversees most major temples in the state.
  • •Day-to-day rituals and ceremonies are conducted by hereditary archakas (priests) belonging to the traditional Adishaiva or Saiva Brahmin lineages, as is customary in South Indian Shiva temples.
  • •The temple also has a board of trustees and executive officers appointed by the HR&CE department to manage its affairs, finances, and festivals.

History

  • •The Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore is believed to have been originally built by the Pallavas in the 7th century, though the current structure dates to the 16th century, rebuilt by the Vijayanagara kings after the original was destroyed by Portuguese invaders in 1566.
  • •The temple is associated with the legend of Parvati worshipping Shiva in the form of a peahen (mayil), giving the area its name, Mylapore.
  • •The Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, dedicated to Krishna as Arjuna's charioteer, was built by the Pallavas in the 8th century and later expanded by the Cholas and Vijayanagara rulers.
  • •The Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur is an ancient Shiva temple linked to sage Valmiki and is believed to have been patronized by the Cholas.
  • •The Ashtalakshmi Temple, built in 1976, is a modern addition, reflecting the city's continued devotion.

Architecture

  • •The temples of Chennai exemplify Dravidian architecture, characterized by towering, pyramid-shaped gopurams (gateway towers) adorned with colorful stucco figures.
  • •The Kapaleeshwarar Temple's east gopuram rises to about 40 meters and is covered with intricate carvings of deities and mythological scenes.
  • •Its vast inner courtyard houses a 6th-century stone lamp pillar and a sacred tank called the Temple Tank.
  • •The Parthasarathy Temple features a unique blend of Pallava and later styles, with a five-tiered gopuram and a sanctum that enshrines multiple forms of Vishnu.
  • •The Marundeeswarar Temple is noted for its ancient stone carvings and a separate shrine to the goddess.
  • •The Ashtalakshmi Temple, facing the sea, showcases a more contemporary South Indian style with its eight shrines dedicated to the eight forms of Lakshmi.

Temple Layout

  • •The temple complex is laid out in a typical Dravidian style, entered through a tall, colorful Rajagopuram (main gateway tower) on the east, with a smaller western gopuram.
  • •Inside, a spacious outer prakaram (circumambulatory corridor) leads to a large open courtyard, where the main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses a lingam representing Shiva as Kapaleeshwarar.
  • •The shrine of Parvati as Karpagambal (Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree) is located in a separate, smaller sanctum within the complex, often facing south.
  • •A notable feature is the temple tank (theertham) called the Mylapore Tank, located just outside the main entrance, while numerous mandapams (pillared halls) and smaller shrines for deities like Ganesha, Murugan, and the 63 Nayanmars (Tamil saints) dot the interior.
  • •The temple's original 7th-century structure was destroyed, and the current layout reflects the 16th-century Vijayanagara-era rebuild, with later additions and renovations.

Tips

  • Plan your visit during the early morning hours (around 6-8 AM) to avoid crowds and experience the serene atmosphere of the temple.
  • Be prepared to remove your shoes before entering the temple. Wear easy-to-slip footwear and carry a plastic bag to store them if lockers are not available.
  • Photography is generally prohibited inside the sanctum sanctorum. Some temples allow photography in the outer courtyards, but always ask for permission.
  • Hire a local guide or take a temple tour to understand the rich iconography and legends associated with each temple. Many temples offer official guides.
  • Combine your temple visits with nearby attractions: For Kapaleeshwarar, explore the vibrant Mylapore market and visit San Thome Basilica, which is just 2 km away.
  • Respect local customs: Do not touch the deities or offerings without permission, and avoid pointing your feet towards the sanctum. Also, be aware of the temple's specific dress code and follow it.

Nearby Attractions

  • San Thome Basilica: A Roman Catholic basilica built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle, located about 2 km from Kapaleeshwarar Temple. It is one of only three churches in the world built directly over an apostle's tomb.
  • Marina Beach: One of the longest urban beaches in the world (about 13 km), located about 3 km from the city center. It is a great place for a stroll, especially in the evening, and offers views of the Bay of Bengal.
  • Fort St. George: The first English fortress in India, built in 1644, now houses the Fort Museum and the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly's older buildings. It is about 4 km from Kapaleeshwarar Temple.
  • Government Museum, Egmore: One of the oldest museums in India (established 1851), known for its bronze gallery and archaeological collection. It is about 6 km away and offers insight into South Indian history.
  • Ashtalakshmi Temple: A modern temple dedicated to the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi, located on the beach road in Besant Nagar. It is a peaceful spot with a view of the sea.

Quick Information

Best Time

The best time to visit Chennai's temples is from November to February, when the weather is pleasant and cool (temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C). This period also coincides with the Margazhi music and dance season (mid-December to mid-January), offering a unique cultural experience. Avoid visiting during the hot summer months (April to June) and the monsoon season (October to November) when heavy rains can disrupt travel. For festival enthusiasts, plan around the Panguni Peruvizha (March-April) or Vaikunta Ekadasi (December-January) to witness grand celebrations.
