Overview
- •Vaishno Devi is a revered cave shrine in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu and Kashmir, India, at an altitude of about 1,584m (5,200 ft).
- •Dedicated to the Goddess as an incarnation of Shakti/Durga, it is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, drawing roughly 8–9 million pilgrims annually.
- •The base town is Katra in Reasi district, about 48km from Jammu by road or rail.
- •The shrine itself is reached only via a ~12–13km paved pilgrim trek, though ponies, palkis, battery-operated vehicles (partway to Ardhkuwari), and helicopter service to Sanjichhat are available.
- •The cave houses three natural rock formations (pindies) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati—not an idol.
- •Managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, the yatra is open year-round.
Tips
- Register online in advance to avoid queues at Katra and ensure your RFID card is ready; carry a government ID for verification.
- Start the trek early morning or late evening to avoid peak heat and crowds; the 12–13km trek takes 6–9 hours on foot, so plan your pace and rest stops.
- Use the battery-operated vehicle from Katra to Ardhkuwari (about 6km) to save energy for the steeper sections beyond; this is especially helpful for elderly or less-fit pilgrims.
- Carry minimal luggage but include warm clothing, as temperatures drop at night and at higher altitudes; rain gear is essential during monsoon (July–September).
- Take advantage of the free langars (food stalls) along the route, but also carry water and light snacks; stay hydrated and use the clean toilet facilities at designated stops.
- After darshan at the main shrine, do not forget to visit Bhairavnath Temple (about 2.5km further), as the yatra is considered incomplete without it; ponies are available for this short stretch.
