Helicopter & Facilities
Overview
- •Vaishno Devi, a revered cave shrine in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu and Kashmir, India, sits at an altitude of about 1,584 meters (5,200 feet).
- •Dedicated to the Goddess Vaishno Devi, an incarnation of Shakti/Durga, it is one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites, attracting roughly 8–9 million pilgrims annually.
- •The base town is Katra in Reasi district, accessible by road and rail from Jammu (about 48 km away).
- •The main shrine is reached via a 12–13 km paved pilgrim trek, which can be covered on foot, by pony, palki, battery-operated vehicle (partway), or helicopter to Sanjichhat, significantly reducing the walking distance.
Facilities
The route is dotted with langars (free community kitchens) offering simple vegetarian meals, tea, and water at regular intervals. Battery-operated vehicles (electric cars) are available from Katra to Ardhkuwari and from Sanjichhat to the Bhawan, helping reduce physical strain. Cloakrooms are available at Katra and near the shrine for storing luggage, and there are numerous rest shelters, toilets, and medical aid posts along the trek.

Tips
- Book the helicopter service well in advance, especially during peak seasons (March–July and September–December), as seats fill up quickly.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry light luggage, as you will need to walk at least a short distance even with helicopter or battery car assistance.
- Carry your own water bottle and some snacks, though langars provide free food and water – it's good to have backups.
- Start your trek early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat, and to have ample time for darshan and the optional visit to Bhairavnath Temple.
- Check the weather forecast and dress in layers, as temperatures can vary significantly from Katra to the shrine.
