Chaitra Navratri
March-April • 9 days
The nine-night festival marking the onset of spring, dedicated to the nine forms of Durga. At Vaishno Devi, the entire hillside resonates with chants and devotional fervor.
Significance: Celebrates the victory of good over evil and honors the goddess in her various manifestations. For devotees, performing the yatra during Navratri is considered especially meritorious.
What to Expect: Massive crowds, extended darshan queues (often 8-12 hours), special decorations and lighting, continuous bhajan/kirtan sessions, and an electrifying atmosphere. Advance booking for darshan and accommodation is strongly recommended.
Sharad Navratri
September-October • 9 days
The autumn Navratri, the most significant and widely celebrated, culminating in Dussehra. The shrine sees its peak pilgrimage season during this period.
Significance: Commemorates the goddess's slaying of Mahishasura. At Vaishno Devi, it is believed that the goddess herself manifests with full power during these nine nights.
What to Expect: The largest crowds of the year, with daily footfall exceeding 100,000. Expect long waits, festive processions, special aartis, and a sea of devotees. Helicopter and pony services are heavily booked; plan months ahead.
Janamashtami
August • 1 day
Celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, this festival is observed with special prayers and fasting at the shrine, blending Vaishnavite and Shakti traditions.
Significance: While primarily a Vishnu festival, it is celebrated with devotion at Vaishno Devi as a reminder of the unity of divine energies. Many devotees combine the yatra with Janamashtami observances.
What to Expect: Moderate crowds compared to Navratri. Special midnight aarti, bhajans, and a festive atmosphere. A quieter time for those seeking a more contemplative pilgrimage.

Planning Tips
- Register online via the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website for yatra permits and darshan slots, especially during festivals.
- Book accommodation in Katra well in advance; during Navratri, rooms fill up weeks ahead. Consider staying in Jammu and commuting if needed.
- Carry minimal luggage; use the cloakroom facilities at Katra. For the trek, pack light with warm layers, rain gear, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Use the battery-operated vehicle (Batmobile) from Katra to Ardhkuwari to save energy, or the helicopter service to Sanjichhat for a quicker start.
- Plan your darshan timing to avoid peak hours (early morning and late evening are busiest). Midday or late night slots may have shorter queues.
- Be prepared for weather changes; the trek is at altitude and can be cold, even in summer. Carry water and snacks, though langars provide free food.
