Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast, blends a colonial past rooted in Fort St. George (founded by the British East India Company in 1644) with deep South

Overview

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast, blends a colonial past rooted in Fort St. George (founded by the British East India Company in 1644) with deep South Indian heritage, exemplified by the Dravidian-style Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore and the San Thome Basilica, built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle. The city's 13-kilometer Marina Beach offers a sweeping urban promenade along the Bay of Bengal, while the Government Museum in Egmore (est. 1851) showcases a renowned bronze gallery. As the cultural capital of South India, Chennai is a vibrant center for Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam, especially during the December Margazhi season, and is also a major automobile manufacturing hub.

Places

Marina Beach

Developed as a formal promenade in the late 19th century, Marina Beach runs past memorials to Tamil political leaders including Anna and M.G. Ramachandran, and remains one of Chennai’s most visited public spaces, drawing crowds for evening walks, street food and sea breeze despite swimming being discouraged due to strong currents. Marina Beach is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. The most favourable months to visit are February, March, April, and January, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Gandhi Statue, Kamarajar Statue, and MGR Memorial. Other notable highlights include gandhi statue and memorial at sunrise, evening stroll past memorials for two former chief ministers, and horse-drawn carriage ride along the promenade. It falls within Tamil Nadu, India.
